Never pour grease of any kind down your toilet or Sink.
This stuff is a quick and easy way to destroy your system. The grease can attach itself to other debris in your pipes and form a clog in your main line (pipes). It also could coat the sides of your seepage-pit and cause the leech system to stop draining.
Never allow the small pieces of bar soap to go down the drain.
Just as grease, the small unused portions of bar soap can attach themselves to other things and the sides of your pipes and form a clog in your main line.
Never allow the small razor covers to go down the shower drain.
When this happens, most of us think, "oh, well, there it goes." But just like the soap pieces, it will catch itself to something else and will sooner or later cause a clog in your main line. The best precaution is not to allow this to happen. Remove the cover before you enter the shower. Better to be safe than sorry later.
Never flush feminine products.
Although the manufacturer says that the item you use is flushable. It has been our experience that they are one of the main causes for main lines to be plugged up. These items do not break down over time. Instead, they collect water and expand 5 and 6 times their original size.
Do keep track of your septic systems maintenance.
Keep track of the last time you had your system maintenance. Depending on the size of your tank and the number of people you have living in your home, you should have your system pumped every 3 to 5 years. When you have your system maintenanced, keep a diagram of its location. It will save you money and save us time. If Ram-Rooter has inspected your system in previous years, we will have this information on file. It is, however, a good idea to make a note of it in your records for future reference.
Do have a toilet that's running repaired.
A running toilet is a major problem that most people would not expect. A running toilet could add a flow of 2 gallons per minute to your seepage pit, which would add 2880 gallons of water each day to your system. This would cause an excess of water to the system and the system would become saturated and unable to drain as normal.
Do not plant your beautiful garden over your system.
Although they say that the grass is always greener over the septic tank, plants and especially trees can cost you money. Even the smallest of roots are able to make their way inside your tank and grow to a very large size. Although at first they are drinking their way through your system, they will sooner or later take over the system and all you have is a tank and pit full of roots, with no place for your solids to go. The best thing to do is only plant grass over this area. When we come to maintenance your system we can put your grass back nice and neat. Other items such as rose bushes and flowers do not hold up to the digging up of their area.
